What causes drains to clog in Lompoc homes?

Most clogs build up slowly. Grease and food go down kitchen drains, hair and soap collect in bathroom drains, and older lines pick up scale and roots. Many Lompoc homes were built in the 1960s to 1980s, so aging drain lines and worn joints are common. A drain that keeps clogging in the same place usually has a cause deeper in the line, not just at the drain opening.

Store-bought chemical cleaners rarely fix a deep clog. They can sit in the pipe, damage older fittings, and still leave the buildup behind. A proper cleaning removes the blockage and checks why it formed.

Signs you need drain cleaning

If you notice any of these, the clog is unlikely to clear on its own.

Slow draining sink or tub

Water that takes its time going down usually means buildup narrowing the pipe.

Standing water

Water sitting in the sink or shower is a blockage, not a slow drain anymore.

Gurgling sounds

Gurgling from a drain or toilet often means air is trapped behind a partial blockage.

Bad smells from a drain

Odors usually come from trapped food, grease or standing water in the line.

Clogs that keep coming back

A clog that returns days after plunging points to roots, scale or a damaged section.

Several drains slow at once

When more than one drain is slow, the problem is often further down the line, toward the sewer.

How do we clean a clogged drain?

Four steps, in order, so the fix lasts longer than a day.

1. Find the blockage

We ask where it is slow and check the fixtures around it to work out how far down the problem sits.

2. Clear it properly

We clear the blockage with an auger or the right cleaning tool for that pipe, then flush the line.

3. Check with a camera if needed

If it keeps coming back, a camera inspection shows roots, buildup or a damaged pipe, so we are not guessing.

4. Hydro jetting where suitable

For stubborn grease and buildup in suitable pipes, high-pressure water cleaning clears the line wall to wall.

5. Test and explain

We run the water, confirm it drains freely, and tell you what caused it and how to keep it clear.

What does drain cleaning work look like?

The photo below is an illustrative example of drain cleaning work — a plumber opening an outdoor drain cleanout — not Pacific Flow Plumbing’s own completed job.

  • A drain snake cable clearing a slow or blocked bathtub drain
  • An outdoor cleanout opened so a clogged line can be cleared from outside
  • If the clog returns, we look for the cause instead of clearing the same drain again

How much does drain cleaning cost?

It depends on where the clog is, how deep it sits, and whether a camera inspection or hydro jetting is needed. You get a written estimate and approve it before work begins. If we find something more serious, like roots or a damaged pipe, we explain it and ask first. No work starts on a surprise bill.

For rental properties, we give landlords and property managers a clear written explanation of the problem and the fix, so tenants and owners are on the same page.

Drain cleaning questions, answered

How long does drain cleaning take?

Most single clogs are cleared in one visit. A deeper blockage, or one that needs a camera inspection, can take longer, and we tell you that before we start.

Will the clog come back?

It can, if the cause is still there, such as roots, heavy grease buildup or a damaged pipe. That is why we check the cause when a clog returns instead of clearing the same drain again.

Are chemical drain cleaners safe?

They can damage older pipes and fixtures, and they rarely clear a deep clog. We do not recommend them as a fix, especially in older Lompoc homes.

Is hydro jetting safe for my pipes?

It suits many pipes but not all of them. We check the condition of the line first and only use it where it is suitable.

Can you clean drains in a rental property?

Yes. We document the problem and the fix in plain language for you or your tenant.

How do I keep drains clear?

Keep grease out of kitchen drains, use a strainer for hair in showers and tubs, and call early when a drain first slows down. Small clogs are cheaper than backups.
